What are the challenges of rice cultivation here in India? Mr Yahaya from the IRRI organisation answered this question and many more in his detailed presentation as part of the 9th grade organic class.
In India, it is customary to burn the fields after the rice harvest in order to make them usable for the cultivation of wheat as quickly as possible. However, this burning of the fields intensifies the annual smog problem that Delhi and the entire region suffers from. For this reason, attempts are being made to breed rice varieties that require a shorter cultivation period and can be harvested earlier. The IRRI organisation is actively involved in solving this problem by researching and breeding such rice varieties.
