Which trees actually grow in Delhi? With this question in mind, the 9th graders set off ontheir excursion to Nehru Park on 29 September 2025. Equipped with identification apps and collection folders, the students explored the tree diversity right outside their doorstep.
Their task was to create a small herbarium using leaves from the most common urban trees in Delhi. It quickly became clear that the familiar species from Germany are rarely found here. Instead, the students encountered Neem, Amaltas, Banyan and Peepal trees – species that make Delhi an unexpectedly green city.
These trees play an important role for Delhi’s urban climate. Lining many of the city’s streets, they provide shade and help lower temperatures during the hot summer months. Anyone navigating the city between school, traffic and daily routines feels this cooling effect immediately.
After their visit to the park, the students can now not only enjoy their leafy shade-givers –they can also name them.
