This thought-provoking and timely topic was unpacked at the German Embassy School New Delhi (DSND) in Chanakyapuri on 4 June. This important discussion was led and delivered by principal Martin van Neerven and Dr. Constantino Xavier, a Deutsche Schule Lisboa alumnus currently based in New Delhi. He serves as a Senior Fellow in Foreign Policy and Security Studies and is a member of the Diplomatic Council Global Think Tank.
Widely respected for his deep insights into India’s strategic posture and global engagement, Dr. Xavier spends a lot of time absorbing information, writing, reading, speaking and explaining how India functions to stakeholders wanting to engage with the country. He describes India as an indispensable and growing country and urges strategic partners to be in a position to answer a simple question, “what can we, as partners, learn from India”.
Dr. Xavier captured the attention of an audience eager to better understand India’s geopolitical mindset. Among the attendees were parents, students, scholars, diplomats, journalists and members of both local and international communities.
He provided a compelling perspective on India’s evolving role in world affairs and its regional priorities. In a session marked by clarity and openness, Dr. Xavier touched on themes ranging from India’s strategic autonomy to its complex relationships with global powers such as the United States, China and Europe.
The talk was followed by a dynamic Q&A session, with attendees raising thoughtful questions around topics sustainable development, political systems, telecommunications, economic growth, democracy, strategic partners, population growth and more.
This event forms part of DSND’s ongoing commitment to global awareness and intercultural dialogue. In an increasingly complex world, such conversations help learners and their families cultivate broader perspectives and a deeper engagement with current affairs.
Dr. Xavier’s discussion has left impression on the school community, sparking continued curiosity and critical thinking about how India defines its place in a changing world.
