“Do it like Saint Martin” — that was the punchline of the play about Martin of Tours. On his birthday, the school community of the kindergarten and primary school gathered in the large hall of the Bulgarian Embassy. Many thanks for the wonderful hospitality!
At 5 p.m., the children set out from the school building with lanterns and blankets, moving into the large foyer with its excellent open space for the performance.
Many families brought a cozy, warm blanket as a gift for Delhi’s street children — even days later. They knew why from the preparations in the kindergarten and primary school:
Martin of Tours shares his red officer’s cloak with a beggar at the city gate of Amiens in France during a cold winter. He cuts the red cloth into two pieces and wraps the freezing man in it. His fellow soldiers mock him: you don’t do things like that.
Yes, sometimes I have to step out of my comfort zone. Take my heart in my hands.
Simply do the good thing — guided by a gut feeling.
The children’s lanterns illuminate the scene, framing the annual theatrical performance.
The Bulgarian Embassy proves to be a wonderful venue. Families sit on the many steps and watch the performance by the lower secondary students. The pupils perform impressively.
Everyone understands what it is about.
About sharing.
About empathy and solidarity.
Carmen, the head of the kindergarten, accompanies the Saint Martin procession with her guitar — full of energy, as always.
“Up above the stars are shining, down here we are shining,” the children sing.
Martin of Tours is a role model.
Keep your eyes open. You can do a great deal of good.
It’s really as simple as giving away a warm blanket.
Some children continue humming the song for a while longer.
They will shine.
With their lovingly crafted lanterns. And along many creative paths that are yet to come.
