„Those who want to perform on stage have to learn their TEXT!“ This was the sentence I’ve used the most over the past term. Second most needed was the following sentence: “If not ALL appear for practice sessions you cannot perform as a team on stage! Both took some time to function! But step by step we got closer to the performance of this play. Although acting simply does not function without the actors knowing their: TEXT, TEXT, TEXT followed by PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE! Obviously, the next step was soon to come: LOUDER!!!!! NO ONE CAN UNDERSTAND YOU! LOUDER!!!!! This led to the last step on our stony way to our performance. We went to the sports ground and shouted at each other. The first complete rehearsal of the play only took place at a workshop on our farm, including some more shouting practice in the garden, two weeks prior to the final performance at the German embassy 28th April. We particularly take delight in the fact that so many students all age groups have worked together to stage our play.  After all, members of the theatre club range from grades 5-11 and those of the band from grades 7-12.

As usual rehearsals were draining as approximately half of the group still didn’t know all their TEXT and we hadn’t practiced much with the band. But, also almost as usual, everything worked out very well in the end and our audience were able to witness an enchanting, exciting detective comedy with stunning support from the band.

The play

Ever since Barbara witnessed a brutal killing more than a year ago, she’s been paralyzed from the neck onwards. Not because she had been physically hurt, but because her body literally “froze with fear”. Because no existing therapy works Barbara volunteers to test a new invention: GIZMO. A microchip is implanted in Barbara’s brain, which is connected to the GIZMO device which looks like a big watch. The person carrying this device controls Barbara’s movements: her body moves in direct synchronicity to the person wearing the device. Thus, Barbara is given the possibility to move at all – until the GIZMO device falls into the wrong hands. Those of the person who had originally ordered the killing Barbara had witnessed….

All in all we enjoyed a delightful performance of the theatre and band clubs. We had an entertaining evening, we finished on a perfect note due to the invitation for snacks and drinks given by the culture department of the German embassy.

We are very much looking forward to our new play next year and another successful cooperation of the theatre and band clubs.
